Southwest Airlines, renowned for its no-fee policy on checked bags, is joining the ranks of major carriers in introducing baggage fees. This marks a significant shift in the airline’s policy, as passengers have previously enjoyed the convenience of avoiding extra costs for checked luggage.
The new baggage fees are set to be implemented across all flights operated by Southwest Airlines. Passengers will now face a choice between paying a standard fee or opting for a more expensive priority service. The standard fee for the first checked bag will be $30, offering a competitive pricing strategy compared to other major airlines. However, the true impact hits frequent fliers, as the fee rises to a substantial $40 for the second checked bag, surpassing the industry average.
Southwest has also outlined that the dimensions and weight of the bags will come into play. Any luggage exceeding the standard size restrictions will be subject to additional charges, starting at $75 and increasing based on the degree of excess. This fee structure aligns with other airlines’ policies, ensuring Southwest maintains competitiveness in the industry.
The airline is introducing these changes as part of a broader strategy to enhance revenue and stay afloat in an increasingly competitive market
