Senate Republicans have united in their call for the introduction of a comprehensive sanctions package targeting Russia. The demand comes as a firm response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its continuing military aggression. Sen. Chuck Grassley took to Twitter to express his strong feelings on the matter, posting: “It’s time for sanctions strong enough so Putin knows ‘game over.'” Grassley’s sentiment reflects the growing frustration among Republicans, who believe current measures aren’t sufficient to deter Russia.
The proposed sanctions would target key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, finance, and defense. Senate Republicans argue that these measures are essential to cripple Putin’s ability to finance his military and end his aggressive actions in Ukraine. The party believes that the West’s initial response was too soft and failed to deter Russia from continuing its onslaught.
