Merseyside Police have confirmed that the incident involving a van colliding with Liverpool football fans was not a terrorist attack. The driver, a 53-year-old man, is in custody and is being questioned about the incident which left several people injured. Police believe he acted alone.
The incident occurred following Liverpool’s triumphant victory over Chelsea to win the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Fans had gathered to celebrate their team’s success when a white transit van veered into the crowd outside the Liverpool Women’s Hospital.Eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle mount the pavement and accelerate towards fans, causing multiple casualties.
Despite initial concerns, police have stated that the event is not being treated as a terrorist incident, indicating it may have been a tragic accident. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Carden reassured the public, “We appreciate this incident will cause concern and upset in the community, especially so close to the anniversary of the Liverpool City Centre attacks in 2019.” He further added that the quick arrest of the suspect and the fact that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the incident, should provide some reassurance.
